Scientific Temper, God and religion

1-    Scientific Temper

Scientific temper is a process of decision making by a person or institution before committing acts of expression or undertaking actions with the purpose of achieving predetermined goals. The correctness of the process determines the achievement or failure of the purpose. It is required in all fields of human endeavours be it be learning, employment, business, sports, adventure, recreation or politics. It lays the foundation of all success and failures. It is therefore essential for every individual to not only acquaint himself with the process but also to master the techniques and to cultivate the habit of using his mind and thought spontaneously before an act of expression or action. It is of immense importance to the peace, prosperity, progress and development of human beings and society. The degree of devotion and dedication of its members who form the society determine the living standards that prevail in the society. The founding fathers of independent India thus made it an essential feature of the Constitution. Article 51A(h) fundamental duties states: “It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to develop the scientific temper, humanism and spirit and reform”. Thus it is bounden duty of every citizen be it the Chief justice of India or chef in a house hold to cultivate the spirit of scientific of temper, humanism and reform.

The first and the foremost beneficiary of Scientific temper is the self. Scientific temper increases the probability of success and diminishes the possibility of failures. Failures brings depression and sorrow while success receives appreciation and gives comfort and happiness. Success is rewarding mentally and materially. Scientific temper keeps the person to be at ease with his self while success inspires him to strife for further achievements his failures makes him aware of his short comings guiding him to eliminate them. With every passing day his happiness increases and moments of stress and sorrow diminishes and makes life worth living enabling him to cope with change in his surroundings. Reforms is therefore a main attribute of every man with scientific temper. As scientific temper spreads amongst the populace, society progress in all aspects of life. Scientific temper is the salient feature of progressive societies all over the World. In fact, development is directly proportional to prevalence of scientific temper. This is evident amongst individuals and societies all over the World.

Scientific temper is a powerful mental technique cultivated in the mind to take correct decision for the fulfilment of one’s purpose. It is the purpose that impacts the society which may be either good or bad. The purpose may be good for the individuals or a category of people but bad for society. For example, the attack on the World trade centre was an excellent display of scientific temper but caused severe destruction to life and property. Indian history and culture is a vivid example of the virtues and vices caused by scientific temper. It was Buddha’s scientific temper that made him the World’s icon for the spread of peace and learning and made the Indian subcontinent the centre of learning and power. It is the dogmatic ‘Manuwadi’ thought that led to the disintegration of indian society into more than seven thousand caste and sub caste. While it was the play of scientific temper on the part of the ‘Manuwadis’ to retain their hegemony, it is lack of scientific temper on the part of the Indian populace who failed to see through their divisive intention and the adverse effect on them. they continue to embrace the divisive Manuwadi culture. Thus Scientific temper is not an end in itself but a mental skill for the fulfilment of ends.

In the middle if the Twentieth century and after the end of the second World war a few countries emerged as sovereign countries amongst them was China, Japan, India and pakisthan. Japan and China consisted of Budhist populace. both suffered the ravages of war and revolution respectively. japan emerged as constitutional monarchy while China became a Communist republic.  India gained independence and emerged as a sovereign, secular, Democratic, Republic. Pakisthan became an Islamic democracy. Japan and China were guided by their own culture and governed according to political principles adopted during their formation as a nation and enforced scientific temper in their governance. Indian and pakisthani rulers paid little regard to the Constitution remained glued to the dogmatic and superstitious beliefs and the consequences is being witnessed the World over. Japan and China have a per capita income of $ 45573and $21476 respectively. Japan ranks 24th and china ranks 75th in the Human development index of the World. On the other hand, the miserable condition of Manuwadi India and Islamic Pakisthan is evident from their per capita incomes and Human Development index. India and Pakisthan have a per capita income of $8379 and $6437 respectively with a Human Development Index ranking 134thand 164th respectively. Inequalities wealth have gone to the extreme with ninety percent public wealth transferred to ten percent of the populace. Thus the scarcity of scientific temper in governance and populace is a curse for human societies.

 2- Cultivating Scientific Temper

Man is born virtuous. Scientific temper is inherent in him since his birth. There is no better Scientific creation than the human body; systematically organised to perform all acts that enables him to cope with the terrain and the vagaries of nature prevailing on earth. His senses enable to see with his eyes, hear with his ears, smell with his nose, feel by his skin, and taste with his tongue all aligned to a brain capable of memorising all that is perceived by his senses and analyse and interpret, them for his guidance and future use. All set in motion at the moment of his birth. All that is needed to be done by him by him is to optimise their uses and distinguish between the grain and the chaff, truth and false hood and use it accordingly. Thus every human being is born equipped with all the hardware required to cultivate a scientific temper. The only thing required is the will, inclination and learning to use them for the wellbeing of the self and the human society. The earlier he sets himself on this path the easier it becomes for him to reach the peaks of excellence and promote excellence in society.

The bulk of the living and non-living entities that we perceive around us by our senses are natural creations which some say are creations by a mysterious entity commonly called god or bhagwan etc. These creations are the embodiment of truths having attributes useful to human beings. As time passed man used these truths to create products to satisfy his desire for necessities, comfort and luxuries. Many of which are found to be true with regard to their usefulness while many are deceptive and found to be untrue or over stated and partially true with regard to their utility to human beings or the environment. In a pecuniary world were money is a medium of exchange of all goods and services these substandard and fake goods and services are sold to the gullible consumers to earn profits. This is the age of technology where communication is no longer limited to word of mouth, but by the use of technology that encompasses the whole world within minutes. A lone individual has the potential to communicate on a subject, according to his choice, to a wide range of public which may be true or untrue. Thus technology has enabled deception become an art to market falsehood, to the common man and make icons out of idiots. This is being resorted to by the rich, powerful and popular men in the society. A scientific temper diminishes the possibility of being trapped by falsehood and propaganda.

The human mind has the potential to do all that it takes to cultivate a scientific temper its potency has to be increased to process the infinite data available and separate the grains from the chaff. True and relevant data alone serves the purpose of scientific temper. This is possible through dedication and learning on a continuous basis. Thus education and awareness along with cognitive thinking are the core ingredients for development of scientific temper.

3- Scientific temper, God and religion

The term God is used to signify a mysterious entity that has never been perceived by our senses. Some believe in his existence and some do not and consider it to be a figment of imagination. Believers believe in him for the sole reason that the infinite universe exist; thus there has to be a creator. The nonbelievers consider the universe being a natural evolution and need not require a creator. Buddha the greatest philosopher of human civilisation did not accept the existence of God. But for some believers, he is worshipped as a reincarnation of God Vishnu to suit their own ends. For a scientifically tempered person he may act as per his wish, keeping in mind that there is no evidence of God bestowing his blessings either on the believers or doing harm on his nonbelievers. Since none have perceived God or the creator through their senses yet his character can be inferred through an analysis of his creations which the believers have attributed to him.

No religion up till this day, has tried to comprehend God through his creations which is available in every nook and corner of the universe. In its place a bunch of unauthentic stories are brought before the people and propagated as acts of God. All consider that there is only one God but no religion has the magnanimity to tolerate followers of other religion as their own brethren. God of the different religious groups vow on the universal concept of God as omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent but need a paid communicator to contact god, specific place to pray to God. Religion therefore is the marketing of faith in God for selfish gains. Religion today is the cause of much conflict and bloodshed in society.

As human beings residing on planet Earth we are a part of the universe. Through our senses we perceive all living and non-living entitie including ourselves as creation by nature. Believers believe it is the hand of God. Who or whatever be the creator physically all living specie are embodiments of Truths arranged in a systematic manner so as to perform since the moment of its birth till the end of its life. The imbalances caused in system through our acts of omission and commission or foreign interference make us fall prey to disease and sufferings. Ultimately all livings creatures come to an end. Yet our longevity differs and its cause is evident to all. Never has our creator interfered in any way with our journey on earth. Our environment is an intricate play of living creatures and nonliving things along with the forces of nature which is called the ecological balance. the cause and consequences of the ecological imbalance is known to us due to the study of science and the consequent discovery of interactions which is repetitive and true at all occasion leading to our advancement of knowledge and truths. Thus our environment is systematically planned self-sustainable system whose evolution or creation required a scientific temper.   Actions causes reactions is not only applicable to humans but the entire ecological system. Be it be God or Whoever or whatsoever be the creator scientific temper has played a major role in its creation. Thus scientific temper  in human beings is the sure path to sustainable progress and success and the supreme attribute in human beings.
